What To Know About "Vampire Tasks"
Many of us are familiar with the concept of "busy work" — tasks we had to take on in school that felt like they didn't do much for us.

Unfortunately, this kind of work doesn't go away once we're out of school. Tasks that suck away time and productivity can be present in our workday, and are sometimes called a different name: "vampire tasks."

This term was coined by Cecily Motley, the co-founder of AI-powered workplace assistant Harriet, Forbes reports.

Some "vampire tasks" may include:
  • Unnecessary meetings and regular check-ins just for the sake of having them
  • Emails or instant messages that provide no value
  • Irrelevant administrative tasks
  • Repetitive and redundant actions that don't correlate with our jobs
  • Other miscellaneous tasks that don't add value to our work
While some "vampire tasks" may be unavoidable, experts say putting your phone and work messenger on "do not disturb" for dedicated periods, time blocking your schedule, and saying "no" to unnecessary tasks when possible can help, CNBC Make It reports.
Tips From a CEO to Boost Productivity
Working longer hours allows you to get more done, right? Not always  — in fact, sometimes, you can even get the same amount of work done in the same (or less time) by using some easy tips to boost productivity.

Tanya Dalton, founder and former CEO of inkWELL Press, told CNBC Make It how she transformed the way she worked — cutting her schedule down nearly 60% from 70 hours of work a week just to 30!

Some of Dalton's productivity tips include:
  • Working for longer periods and taking longer breaks: Instead of 25-minute work sessions, Dalton said she found that working for periods of an hour or more and taking a bigger break helped her get into a better flow.
  • Doing self-check-ins: This allows you to see how you're feeling, what you need to adjust, and where you want to grow.
  • Focusing on tasks completed  — rather than the time spent doing it: Rather than feeling like you "have to" work for 40 hours, instead focus on getting what needs to be done, done. This may help you work more productively, rather than feeling like you have to spread out that work over a longer period.
Some other productivity tips we love include setting up a workspace that helps you work productively, tackling difficult and long tasks first, and going on a walk outside when you feel like you're in a rut.

How Meeting-Free Days Can Boost Your Productivity
"This meeting could've been an email."

Many of us have thought this to ourselves at some point or another while at work. While they're often necessary for collaboration, both in-person and virtual sessions can feel like time-suckers — especially when they're not productive.

One leadership expert even said that when they worked in big enterprises, "70-75%" of the workday would be spent in meetings.

It turns out, that having meeting-free days — when companies or individuals block off their schedules for independent work — can boost productivity.

Research from MIT Sloan Management Review found that across 76 companies, each with at least 1,000 employees, those that introduced at least one meeting-free day saw:

A boost in...
  • Autonomy
  • Satisfaction
  • Productivity
  • Engagement
  • Communication
... and a decrease in...
  • Stress
  • Micromanagement
Whether you're in a management or staff position, finding ways to limit meetings to specific days — and even having one that's free of group calls or sessions — can help you focus on your own work and get things done!
