Navigating Work When You Don't Vibe With Your Boss
If you've ever had a boss you just don't quite vibe with, you're not alone.
However, that doesn't mean you have to spend every day dreading work or afraid you're going to say or do something wrong.
To make the workday more manageable:
- Ask for advice. If you have coworkers or others who have worked with your boss for a longer period, you can gently ask for some tips on how to better communicate with them and handle different scenarios.
- Know you are doing your best. While it's certainly frustrating when you don't get along with a coworker — especially a higher-up — know that there are always going to be people we get along better with than others.
- Try to practice empathy. We can't change another person's behavior, but we can try to shift our perspective.
- Be direct. Speaking with your boss to try and smooth out any issues may be uncomfortable, but it can be an important, productive conversation.
- When necessary, bring it to attention. Having a formal conversation with HR or another higher-up is not ideal, but in some cases, it may be necessary (especially if you've navigated other channels).

How To Make a Monotonous or Uninteresting Job More Exciting

While you can't change your job, you can find some ways to spice it up!
- Find something to engage in and pass the time: Especially if you're doing repetitive things or tasks where you're not deep in thought, it can be helpful to throw on a fun playlist, podcast, or video in the background!
- Look for opportunities: Asking for opportunities to change up your work, taking a course that can help you with your job, or tackling another task with a coworker can keep you engaged.
- Engage with others: Meeting new people and engaging with your coworkers can help the day go by more quickly and give you an opportunity to network!
