In a move to spend less and budget more, some people do a "no-spend challenge."
Much like the name suggests, this kind of challenge is where you aim to not spend any money on things beyond essentials.
It may break down like this:
"Allowed" in a no-spend challenge:
- Groceries
- Rent and bills
- Medical and healthcare costs
- Personal care items (soap, essential skincare, razors, toilet paper, etc).
- Gas and transportation costs
- Debt repayments
- Any other miscellaneous musts
- Essential repairs
"Not allowed" in a no-spend challenge:
- Clothing
- Eating out
- Home decor
- Other truly non-essential costs
Of course, these are not hard and fast rules, and you have to determine what you put in your budget and what you don't!
Some people may even opt not to buy groceries or anything else if they can manage during a short-term no-spend challenge. Instead, they may eat whatever they can find from their freezer or pantry and lean on what they have at home.
People typically do a no-spend challenge for a set period, like a week or a month. However, others may go more extreme and do a no-spend year!
Fans of no-spend challenges say it teaches them to be truly mindful of what they buy and to live more consciously.
If you're curious about trying a no-spend challenge, you could do it for a day or a few days!
